The ultimate guide to organizing your jewelry collection: tips and tricks

Proper care is key to lasting fine jewelry.

The ultimate guide to organizing your jewelry collection: tips and tricks

Do you have a collection of jewelry that's lost its shine?

Whether it's a treasured heirloom or just your favorite everyday pieces, we all know the frustration of watching our beautiful investments become dull and tarnished over time.

But fear not! With some simple tips and tricks, you can restore your jewelry to its former glory and keep it looking fabulous for years.

Tips for keeping your jewelry safe and organized

One of the most important things for your jewelry collection is storing it properly.

Sort your jewelry by type.

This will make it easier to grab what you need and put it back when you're done wearing it. You also want to sort by material.

  • Gemstone jewelry should be stored separately from gold or silver pieces to avoid scratching. Diamonds are the hardest material so they need extra protection away from other gems. Diamonds can scratch other gemstones.
  • Gemstones like emeralds are as soft as a wine glass and can be scratched very easily. Protect them in a separate container.
  • Store fragile items like pearl necklaces in a soft pouch or box to protect them from damage.
  • Pearls and opals are also delicate and should be stored separately from other jewelry, so they don't get scratched or cracked.

Use dividers in your jewelry box to keep things extra organized.

Dividers help maximize the space in your box and keep different types of jewelry from getting tangled up together. You can find dividers that fit most standard jewelry boxes, or make your own.

Keep delicate pieces safe by storing them separately from bulkier items.

This will prevent them from getting damaged or tangled up with other pieces. Store them in soft pouches or wrapping paper to protect them while not worn.

The dos and don'ts of storing your jewelry and maximizing longevity

Dos

  • Keep your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing it in the bathroom, where it can be exposed to humidity.
  • Use a soft cloth or pouch to store each piece of jewelry separately. This will help prevent scratches and other damage.
  • Take off your jewelry before activity, such as exercising or cleaning.

Don'ts

  • Don't expose your jewelry to harsh chemicals like cleaners, hand sanitizer, or pool chlorine. These can damage the finish and cause discoloration.
  • Don't pile all your jewelry together in one drawer or box. This can lead to tangles and scratches.
  • Don't store your jewelry in direct sunlight, which can cause discoloration.
  • Don't store your jewelry in a place with high humidity, such as the bathroom.

Storing specific pieces of jewelry

Necklaces: To avoid tangles, store these necklaces by hanging them on hooks or pegs. You can also lay them flat in a drawer lined with soft fabric.

Bracelets: Store bracelets on bracelet stands or wrap them around the base of a jewelry box. This will keep them from getting tangled and make them easy to grab.

Rings: Keep rings organized and protected by storing them in ring holders or trays. This way, you can see all your options immediately, and they'll be less likely to get lost in a messy drawer.

Earrings: Earrings can be stored in multiple ways, but the most important thing is to keep pairs together.

Watches: Watches should be stored in individual compartments or trays to avoid scratching.

What jewelry collection storage and organization options are available?

There are a few different options for storing and organizing your jewelry collection.

One option is to invest in a jewelry box, jewelry safe, or armoire. These pieces of furniture are specifically designed for storing and organizing jewelry and come in various styles to fit any taste.

Another option is to use a dresser drawer or other small space in your home to create your jewelry storage system. This can be as simple as using dividers to keep everything organized.

Alternatively, you can get more creative with it and use small fishing tackle boxes to store different types of jewelry or opt for a space-saver such as a wall-mounted jewelry organizer.

The benefits of investing in a wall-mounted jewelry organizer

A wall-mounted jewelry organizer is a great way to keep your jewelry collection organized and looking its best. Here are some benefits of investing in a wall-mounted jewelry organizer:

  • Keeps your jewelry organized and easy to find. A wall-mounted jewelry organizer can help you keep your necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other pieces separated and easy to grab when needed.
  • Protects your jewelry from damage. A wall-mounted organizer protects your jewelry from getting tangled or damaged when stored in a drawer or box.
  • Prevents tarnishing and corrosion. When stored properly, your jewelry will be less likely to become tarnished or corroded.
  • Makes it easy to clean your jewelry. A wall-mounted organizer makes dusting and cleaning your jewelry easier, so it will always look its best.

Maintaining your jewelry

Cleaning

To clean your custom gemstone jewelry, this is not recommended for inlay jewelry: :

  1. Mix a solution of one part dish soap with two parts warm water.
  2. Add your jewelry to the mixture and let it soak for a few minutes.
  3. Use a soft toothbrush to scrub away any dirt or grime.
  4. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

You can also use commercial jewelry cleaners but read the labels carefully. Some cleaners are only meant for gold or silver, not costume jewelry. Test the cleaner on a small, hidden area of the piece before using it all over.

Maintenance

To keep your jewelry looking its best:

  1. Avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals like bleach or chlorine.
  2. Take off your jewelry before swimming or showering.
  3. Store pieces properly.

    Cleaning Your YITM Jewelry

    Gold, Diamonds & Sapphires
These materials are the most durable and easiest to clean. Use warm water, a small amount of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush to gently remove buildup. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, and abrasive materials. Jewelry with exclusively gold and diamonds or sapphires can go in ultrasonic cleaners. The gold parts of the jewelry can be shined with the polishing cloth included in all YITM orders.

    Inlay Jewelry
Inlay pieces require special care. Do not soak or submerge in water. Do not put in an ultrasonic machine. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth only. Moisture and chemicals can occasionally change the color composition of soft turquoise and variscite stones. Remove when applying lotion, oil, cleaning or swimming. The gold parts of the jewelry can be cleaned with the polishing cloth included in all YITM orders.

Sunstones, Tourmaline, Topaz, Garnet, Amethyst or Peridot
These stones are more delicate. We do not use them in rings for this reason. If these stones are in your other YITM styles, do not use ultrasonic cleaners, steam, or harsh cleaners. Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth if needed, then dry immediately. The gold parts of the jewelry can be cleaned with the polishing cloth included in all YITM orders.

    Storage & Long-Term Care

Store each piece separately to prevent scratching, ideally in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box. Keep jewelry away from humidity, extreme temperatures, and direct sunlight. Periodic professional inspections are recommended for rings worn regularly.

For everyday, forever wear, we recommend a simple pure gold band. Our inlay and accent jewelry is best worn as the occasion permits. Please visit our FAQ page for more detailed care guidance.
