From Classic to Contemporary: A Guide to Diamond Cuts

From Classic to Contemporary: A Guide to Diamond Cuts

When it comes to diamonds, there's more to their beauty than meets the eye.

While their dazzling sparkle is captivating, how a diamond is cut significantly affects its appeal.

The cut is often considered the most crucial factor in determining a diamond's value.

But what are the different cuts of diamonds?

And what are the different cuts of diamonds called?

Let's dive into the world of diamond cuts and how the different types make each diamond unique.

A Quick Overview of The 4Cs of Diamonds

Before we explore the various diamond cuts, let's quickly touch upon the 4Cs of diamonds: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

The diamond's cut involves the shaping and polishing process. This transforms its rough form into a magnificent gem. This process also maximizes its brilliance, fire, and beauty.

The Gemological Institute of America is the leader in the industry when grading and certifying diamonds. They assess the diamond's cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, among other crucial factors.

The cut quality of a diamond is a crucial aspect that can't be overlooked. The cut grade, ranging from Excellent to Poor, considers proportions, symmetry, and polish.

While the other three Cs contribute to a diamond's quality, the cut highlights its brilliance.

Different Cuts Of Diamonds Explained

Diamond cutting has evolved into a precise and specialized craft. Skilled artisans use advanced technology and computer modeling to transform rough diamonds into works of art.

Let's find out what all the different cuts of diamonds are called.

Round Cut Diamonds

For many decades, round-cut diamonds have been considered the best diamond cut for engagement rings.

Round Brilliant cut diamonds have 58 facets that reflect and refract light, creating an unmatched sparkle. Their symmetrical shape suits a wide range of settings and styles.

Princess Cut Diamonds

Princess cut diamonds have a brilliant faceting pattern that provides exceptional sparkle.

A princess cut diamond offers a contemporary alternative to traditional round diamonds. They combine the brilliance of a round cut with a distinct square shape.

Its pointed corners give it a unique character. This cut looks stunning in solitaire settings and halo designs.

Cushion Cut Diamonds

Cushion-cut diamonds have larger facets that create a distinct pattern of light and dark areas. This is called the "crushed ice" effect.

Cushion-cut diamonds offer a classic and romantic charm. They complement antique-style settings and can create a breathtaking vintage engagement ring.

Emerald Cut Diamonds

Originating in the Art Deco era, the emerald cut is named after the gemstone it was originally used for. This step-cut diamond features long, rectangular facets that create a hall-of-mirrors effect.

Emerald cut diamonds exhibit a unique elegance and distinct "open" appearance. The long facets highlight the diamond's clarity.

Asscher Cut Diamonds

Asscher cut diamonds are square-shaped with cropped corners. This cut showcases a stepped facet pattern that creates mesmerizing reflections.

The Asscher cut is perfect for those who appreciate the vintage charm and geometric precision. Its unique design captures the eye and adds an air of timeless sophistication.

Radiant Cut Diamonds

Radiant cut diamonds have a fiery brilliance that makes them stand out in any setting.

Their faceting allows for excellent light dispersion, giving them a captivating sparkle. This cut features a unique pattern of triangular and rectangular facets.

Oval-Cut Diamonds

Oval-cut diamonds are an excellent choice for those who desire a unique diamond. This cut features similar faceting to round diamonds but is elongated.

Oval cuts have gained popularity for their ability to provide the appearance of a larger diamond due to their elongated form.

Pear-Cut Diamonds

Also known as the teardrop cut, this unique shape combines the brilliance of a round cut with the elegance of a marquise cut.

Pear cut diamonds have a pointed end and a rounded edge, creating a shape that resembles a tear. They look stunning in a solitaire setting or when accentuated with side stones.

This is a very versatile cut diamond for stacking as each side of the stone can be accessories differently.

Marquise Cut Diamonds

This elongated diamond shape with pointed ends is said to have been inspired by the smile of the Marquise de Pompadour.

Marquise cut diamonds have a larger surface area, making them appear larger than other cuts of the same carat weight.

They are traditionally set in a North/ South orientation, but at  Young In The Mountains, we love setting them on the East/ West horizontal alignment to further the stunning, “eye” shape of the marquise cut.

    Jewelry Care

Diamonds, sapphires and gold are the traditional materials to wear as engagement or wedding jewelry because they are the most durable. Only these three materials are our recommendation for use as an engagement ring. Sunstones, emeralds, opals and inlay stones are beautiful accents, but should not be considered up for every day, forever wear in an engagement ring stack.  Forever is a long time, so choose wisely when considering a ring to be the everyday representation of your love. It’s a big decision to represent your love with fine jewelry, consider a versatile set that can we worn in all the different times and events in your life. All jewelry requires care and attention, so please realize just because a ring is chosen from our website and presented as a wedding ring, does not mean it's appropriate for everyday wear. The materials are very important. All jewelry should be taken off before bathing, swimming, yoga, applying lotions, working out, doing the dishes, etc. We recommend a simple pure gold band as the everyday forever wedding ring. Our inlay jewelry can be worn as the occasion permits. More information is explained in our FAQ PAGE.
