Young In The Mountains: What are the 4 Cs of diamond grading?

Ethical diamonds to celebrate your love and values.

Young In The Mountains: What are the 4 Cs of diamond grading?

Diamonds can symbolize everlasting love and luxury, but have you ever wondered how they are graded?

The price of a diamond is based on all four of the Cs, so knowing how each one affects a diamond's value can help you make informed decisions when buying diamonds.

Although the grading criteria may differ slightly, the 4 Cs can also grade other gemstones.

Get ready to unveil the mysteries behind diamond grading!

Exploring the Past and Significance of the 4 Cs of Diamond Grading

The development of the 4 Cs of diamond grading began in 1939 when the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) established uniform standards for assessing diamonds.

The GIA's system quickly became the international standard for evaluating diamonds and remains so today.

However, diamond grading systems have become easier and faster with technological advances.

The 4Cs are universally used to compare diamonds objectively. They are also important because they can help you understand a diamond's value.

Cut: Exploring the Different Types of Cuts

Cut is considered the most significant of the 4 Cs of diamond grading because it impacts a diamond's brilliance, fire, and overall beauty.

The most popular types of cuts are the brilliant cut, the step cut, and the mixed cut.

  • The brilliant cut is by far the most popular type of diamond cut. It is characterized by its round shape and 58 facets, which allow it to reflect light extremely well.

  • The step cut is another popular type with elements similar to Art Deco. These diamonds have a vintage vibe that is becoming more popular each year.

  • The mixed cut is a shape with 50 facets giving it good light reflection properties.

Color: Examining the Different Colors of Diamonds

Most people are familiar with white diamonds, but did you know that diamonds come in various colors?

While white diamonds are still the most popular choice for engagement rings and other fine jewelry, colored diamonds are becoming increasingly popular.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) uses a scale from D (no hue) to Z (a yellowish-hued diamond), with colored diamonds falling outside of this range.

The most valuable diamonds are those with rarer hues like blue, pink, and red.

Clarity: Reviewing the Various Clarity Levels

"Clarity" refers to blemishes or inclusions on the surface or within the stone.

  • Inclusions are naturally occurring minerals or internal fractures present when the diamond is formed.
  • Blemishes are usually external and can be polishing lines, nicks, or chips.

The size, number, position, color, and nature of these blemishes and inclusions will affect a diamond's clarity grade.

GIA uses six different clarity levels ranging from Flawless to Included.

Carat Weight: Understanding Carat Weight

In simple terms, carat weight is how a diamond is measured and is often used to determine the value of a diamond.

One carat equals 0.2 grams, and there are 100 points in one carat (so a half-carat diamond would be 50 points).

Two diamonds may have the same carat weight, but they vary significantly in size.

Carat weight is not necessarily an overall size or dimension indicator. Two diamonds that weigh the same may look very different in size.

Tips for Purchasing a Diamond

Here are a few tips to help you choose the right diamond for you:

  • Consider the 4Cs. Of course, carat weight, color, clarity, and cut are important factors when purchasing a diamond. It's important to consider all 4 Cs of diamond grading in combination, rather than focusing on just one or two, to get the best value for your money.
  • Get educated about treatments and enhancements. Diamonds can be treated or enhanced to improve their appearance. All GIA reports will announce if treatments have been used to improve the stone.
  • Choose the right setting. The setting is just as important as the diamond itself! Work with Young In The Mountains to choose between our two popular settings that complement the diamond and fit your style best.

    Jewelry Care

Diamonds, sapphires and gold are the traditional materials to wear as engagement or wedding jewelry because they are the most durable. Only these three materials are our recommendation for use as an engagement ring. Sunstones, emeralds, opals and inlay stones are beautiful accents, but should not be considered up for every day, forever wear in an engagement ring stack.  Forever is a long time, so choose wisely when considering a ring to be the everyday representation of your love. It’s a big decision to represent your love with fine jewelry, consider a versatile set that can we worn in all the different times and events in your life. All jewelry requires care and attention, so please realize just because a ring is chosen from our website and presented as a wedding ring, does not mean it's appropriate for everyday wear. The materials are very important. All jewelry should be taken off before bathing, swimming, yoga, applying lotions, working out, doing the dishes, etc. We recommend a simple pure gold band as the everyday forever wedding ring. Our inlay jewelry can be worn as the occasion permits. More information is explained in our FAQ PAGE.
